Newsletter Roundup: Social Media

Did you know as part of your self love journey you can include social media accounts that uplift? Yes, there are many problems with technology and social media, but there are also some great people doing (and sharing) good things.

Over the past few years in our founder, Liza Kindred’s, weekly-ish Friday email we told you about quite a few of these accounts (and threads) that we’ve enjoyed following which bring good to the online world. Here are the accounts along with some golden twitter threads. And if you’re interested…

Self love journey: social media

I heard someone say that the difference between happiness and joy is that joy is shared. I love that!

And so I share this with you: a Twitter thread full of photos of Black men just… smiling. (I love the cheesy grins the most.)

This is one of the most popular links I have ever shared with you. Why? (I don't know) But here is the picture I can't stop looking at and giggling: a reportedly 140-year-old tortoise wearing her 5-day-old son as a hat. And why not!

When it comes to big-wave surfing, there are tall waves, and then there are "heavy" waves. If you want to see what a "heavy" wave looks like, check out this winning ride from the 2020 World Surf league championships in Nazare, Portugal... and yes, that is a WOMAN riding that monster wave.

I love this account. It has great quotes and unusual black & white photos of writers, artists, and some celebrities. It always offers the unexpected.

Color scheme? This bird doesn’t need no stinking color scheme! It will just take all the colors at once, thank you very much.

A meteor hit an active volcano (?!) and somehow a wonderful photographer was there to capture it in this truly amazing photo. Click the link above for the full photo!

Hairstylist Hadassa Felix has carved out a niche for herself by untangling the hair of women who, for highly personal reasons, haven't tended to or brushed their hair in a loooong time–sometimes years. She is full of love and kindness and patience, and her results are transformative. Her voice is like butter and she maintains a joy-filled, judgment-free zone.

May we all treat others with such kindness.

Hoping you are able to find some moments of sweetness. And if all else fails, don't forget that pictures of dogs are awesome.

“Journalist, storyteller, lifelong reader. Texan by birth and by choice.” May I recommend following Dan Rather on Twitter? ☺️

History provides context to everything around you. Knowledge is Power. ✊✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 The account offers very random and almost always interesting photos from the past.

Meet the first TikTok star from the Tatuyo Indigenous community, deep in the Amazonian rainforest in Brazil. Her name is Cunhaporanga Tatuyo, she has six million followers, and I hope that her generous sharing of her life bestows nothing but blessings on herself and her community. She shares her customs, language, and daily life. (A video of her eating a larva was her first viral hit. 🐛) I could watch her videos for days.

Travel tips and Dad joke hits. A breakout star account. Yes, seriously–they have a million followers for a reason. The New York Times even confirmed they are “the funniest travel account on Instagram.”

This is an account run by a cuddly guy named Terrell Davis, where he drinks a lot of tea, smokes weed, shows you his many plants, and makes you feel like his very best friend. It might be just what you need. (He's on TikTok and YouTube, too.)

Word of the Day, facts and observations on language, lookup trends, and wordplay from the editors at Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Super timely, cheeky, and a lot of fun.

Poet, activist, writer, dreamer.

"Poetry is always at the pulse of the most dangerous and most daring questions that a nation or a world might face."

Tibetan Buddhism, Meditation, and Yoga. Spirituality but make it memes.

“Your only source for professional dog ratings.” Yes, we like dogs. Like, a lot.

From hugs, to bum pats, to high fives to reassuring words, please enjoy one of our favorite gif accounts.

People of South Asian descent submit photos of their own family's history to share. Or, in their own words, “South Asian history retold by the Vanquished.”

Filmmaker explorer, fly fisherman, Fish or Die on Animal Planet and Liza’s cousin.

A few golden threads on Twitter:

His eyes give him away. Lol. // Some days you're the dog, some days you're the cat, and some days you're the parent saying some sh*t you never thought you should have to say. 😂

"Do you have white teenage sons?” // taught us a LOT about how kind teenage boys get radicalized online and what parents can do about it.

Weird pictures of pets // This thread on Twitter asked people to share and the results are hilarious.

The Greta Thunberg Helpline // For adults angry at a child.
